| Understanding the Human Psych in a CoverUp So why would the Carbonites and public believe such a spoof? Simple - Human Nature. They DIDN'T WANT TO BELIEVE that a ufo crashed in the pond. Psychology 101 folks! If someone doesn't want to believe something, they will grasp ANY explanation (NO MATTER HOW RIDICULOUS ) and ACCEPT it rather than face up to whatever frightens them into not wanting to believe. This does NOT make them disfunctionable or mentally incompetent in any way, shape or form. It simply makes them human . After all folks, we are talking about something possibly from another world landing outside their town! I ask you - how would you react. We are all subject to the human condition..and the human condition has been analyzed to death as to how people react to given circumstances. Unfortunately there are those that take these analyzed results and use them against us. And in the case of people witnessing ufos and events thereof , they have always been subjected to negative manipulative techniques. Lets discuss the human condition and how it applies to the witnesses of the ufo crash in Carbondale. I think it is important in understanding why many facts have not come out and more witnesses haven't come forward. ------------------ ACCEPTING THE OBVIOUS LIE OF THE LANTERN OVER THE UFO EVENT I have often asked myself the question what could possibly cause intelligent people to accept the ridiculous lantern story. I have finally come to the following conclusion, basing it on on the human condition . FEAR 1. Fear of the unknown 2. Fear of ridicule 3. Fear of life changes as one has known it. VARYING STORIES CAN BE A SIGNAL IN ITSELF As I was interviewing witnesses of the crash I noticed that each had a different version . The event was the same - but the details varied. Now this can be very detrimental when someone is trying to convince the public or media that something happened in Carbondale. Although detrimental to those not in the know, for those that do understand , this , although not to be considered conclusive, should be considered to be an IMPORTANT INDICATOR that something DID happen. It is then up to the researcher to be patient and understanding with the witness and 'EDUCATE' the public and media on the hows and whys of the recollection variance. While listening and questioning witnesses, I realized I was working with two factors which created a a variance in the recollection of events. One was, understandably, brought on by the trauma of the event Two was conflicting mini events happening at the same time as the main event. Such as people working for or hired by a branch of our government to create confusing and chaotic factors , ie the lantern being tossed in the pond and recovered or government and other large tarped trucks coming and going (using a variety of routes ) through those days. SHOCK OR TRAUMA WILL CREATE DISTORTION IN MEMORY (Again, keep in mind this is no way a slur to the good people of Carbondale, but my means of trying to help them and others understand that this is only part of the human condition. ) THE SHOCK FACTOR Think about it - The town people witnessed a ufo moving about under the surface of water in their silt pond, their quiet little town became overrun with media , out of towners , MILITARY and CIVIL DEFENSE. The people of Carbondale are hard working , traditional people, relying on community and church to share the good times and support each other through the difficult times. For those people, for the next coming days, their ordered world had been rocked off its foundation. TRAUMA INDUCED AMNESIA Just like the people of Kecksburg , the townspeople are divided as to what took place during this time. Some insist that nothing happened - while others insist that it did. For those that witnessed the event, they do not understand why the others insist nothing happened. Maybe they actually believe nothing did happen. The mind works mysteriously. If something happens that is not acceptable to the observer, the mind will conveniently shut that memory down. It is called 'trauma induced amnesia'. In the following paragraphs I will try to explain how this happens, based on my research of the subject. There are two basic types of amnesia. One is caused from a trauma to the brain. Another is brought on by psychological trauma. The technical term for this is Psychogenic Amnesia and results from some sort of psychological trauma that occurs after witnessing, or surviving, a traumatic event . In the Carbondalien case, it was the UFO Crashing into the Silt Pond, The onslaught of Media and out of towners rushing to the site - the take over of the area by the military and civil defense and then to top it off - having to live with a coverup. That coverup was ' IT NEVER HAPPENED'. In Psychogenic Amnesia, the mind shuts down its memory systems in order to protect the individual from the memory of the trauma which occurred. Some memories come back in bits and pieces and some memory may never return..depending on how traumatic it was for the witness. The returned memory, still being protected by the brain, may return to the witness garbled and out of sequence - thus creating the confusion we see in Carbondale as in the synchronicity of events taking place with the crash and afterwards. In the case of a patient of a Dr. Cohen, which we will refer to as 'K', I will illustrate how psychological amnesia may affect the one experiencing the trauma. Patient K was a 53 year old man who was under extreme stress in his life. He was left home alone one afternoon while fixing the oven. When his family returned, they found him dazed and uncommunicative, apparently as a result of an electrical shock. They were unable to rouse K. and immediately called emergency services. K. was taken to the hospital and awoke a few days later, thinking that it was 1943 and that he was 14 years old. He had lost 40 years of his life. There was no physical damage to his system that could have caused K’s amnesia; as a result, his amnesia is thought to be psychological in nature. There is no effective treatment for psychologically based amnesias; most of them recover on their own. But a few, like patient K., never regain their memories or their old lives. Similar to the case of Patient K, many times in our abduction support group, we hear stories of people with missing time. In the case of Frank Scassellati, an abductee living in nearby Carbondale, he experienced approximately 2 hours of missing time due to the traumatic event of having contact with a ufo during his teenage years and experiencing the visitation of a strange black car parked outside of his house for hours at a time, after the event, for 5 days. In this case, not only was Frank affected by the ufo but the intimidation of what is popularily known as the 'Men in Black". What took place for the missing two hours has never been recovered. We may only hope as in the case of the Carbonites they will recover with full memory. The key, I find, is patience, understanding , support and being there to listen when the client or clients are ready to talk. THE IMPORTANCE OF UNDERSTANDING MEMORY AND THE HUMAN CONDITION In the research of Carbondale, it is not only important to know the truth of the event that occured that night in 1974 but it is equally important to understand how it affected the memories of the witnesses - The study of people with amnesia is really about the study of memory. Their memory loss helps scientists to learn about the brain’s memory systems, what types of memories that there are, how we remember and where certain types of memories are stored. The brain’s hippocampal system brings together the strings of information that we receive from our senses – sight, sound, touch, taste and smell – and binds this information together to create solid memories. When the hippocampus is damaged, memories are not made. Thus, amnesia. In other cases, memories are altered, which" could" be one of two reasons for the variations of stories coming from the Carbondalien witnesses. Jonathan Letham puts it quite eloquently in his book “The Vintage Book of Amnesia. where he states that fiction is made out of memory and that life is making a story out of memory. He calls the amnesiac a severely disabled novelist – an individual with a few clues who is trying to cobble together a world, trying to come up with a persuasive story out of mere fragments. And this my friends is exactly what I saw in Carbondale. People trying to fit the fragmented pieces together- people shutting the memory out completely- others in complete denial , disassociating themselves from their trauma - and others ... THE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COVERUP AND THEIR LIES TO THE PEOPLE OF THEIR TOWN AND THE OUTSIDE WORLD , living in fear that the outside world will know their secret - a secret causing their personalities to border on a paranoiac breakdown. I was there in their local restaurant, McDonnells, picking a time when I knew many would be there having breakfast. I did not want to speak with them at that time - I wanted to study them and .watch their body language. It didn't take long to figure out I was in a town that was in deep trouble. Is Carbondale alone in their trauma - No - Kecksburg suffers much the same as does most of the towns that have experienced similar events. Sigmund Freud's original psychological model of memory involved the "repression" of negative experiences or uncomfortable desires in order to maintain the functionality of the person's conscious identity, or ego, which could otherwise be seriously threatened. This repressed matter, however, does not entirely disappear, according to Freud: it inevitably expresses itself in the form of the psychological symptom. Trauma is known to cause severe psychological and emotional consequences. There are a variety of disorders brought on by Trauma such as a variety of psychiatric disorders, including dissociative disorders (such as dissociative identity disorder/multiple personality disorder), anxiety disorders (panic attacks, etc.), personality disorders (borderline personality disorder, etc.), mood disorders (such as depression), PTSD, and addictions. COPING WITH TRAUMA Psychological "trauma" is defined by the American Psychiatric Association as "an event or events that involved actual or threatened death or serious injury, or a threat to the physical integrity of self or others." Examples include military combat, violent personal attack, natural or manmade disasters, and torture. One of the most effective ways people cope with overwhelming trauma is called DISSOCIATION. This is a complex mental process during which there is a change in a person's consciousness which disturbs the normally connected functions of identity, memory, thoughts, feelings and experiences (daydreaming during a boring lecture is a good example). People may use their natural ability to dissociate to avoid conscious awareness of a traumatic experience while the trauma is occurring, and for an indefinite time following it. For some people, conscious thoughts and feelings, or "memories," about the overwhelming traumatic circumstance may emerge at a later date. This delayed retrieval of traumatic memories has been written about for nearly 100 years in clinical literature on military veterans who have survived combat. In POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER, the defining psychiatric diagnostic features are MEMORY DISTORTIONS. It is common for traumatized people to make deliberate efforts to avoid thoughts or feelings about the traumatic event and to avoid activities or situations which may remind them of the event. This could be why some of the townspeople are so adamant in not wanting to talk about the event. CASE STUDIES SHOW THAT TRAUMATIC EVENTS IN WHICH THE VICTIMS AE COERCISED INTO SILENCE ARE MORE LIKELY TO INDUCE FORGETTING AS A DISSOCIATIVE DEFENCE. Coercism comes in many forms such as inducing fear or ridicule. In the case of Carbondale, I believe both forms may have been involved. Initially fear through military and political motives and then ridicule from those that 1) did not believe in the event or 2.) may have purposely used this tactic through the press and debunkers for the purpose of maintaining silence. COERCISM AND MATT GRAEBER - INVESTIGATOR OF CARBONDALE UFO I have used myself as an example as to how coercism works in attempting to silence a witness. . Since my attempts to solve this mystery of the ufo in Carbondale Pennsylvania, I have been coercised by Matt Graeber. For those that don't know him, he was one of the original investigators, the very one that handled the lantern after it was pulled out of the water. He and two other investigators, according to Graebers own words were the ones that announced there was no ufo in the pond but what was moving under there for several days was nothing but a lantern thrown into the pond by a young boy. You will find it quite interesting to see how protective one becomes and the lengths they will go to to protect themselves from being discovered in a coverup. At this time, we are convinced that Graeber is part of the coverup..and the investigation of the other two investigators is still pending. Updates on this investigation will be found on this site or on the message board. Click Here to read. BUT HOW COULD A WHOLE TOWN SHOW THE SIGNS OF DISSOCIATION - - INCLUDING THE ONES THAT WERE NOT IN CARBONDALE AT THE TIME? AFTER ALL - THEY WEREN'T TRAUMATIZED? THE WORLD POPULATION LIVES IN A CULTURE OF LEADERS AND FOLLOWERS. To be a leader, one needs to UNDERSTAND THE HUMAN CONDITION. This is a study not taken lightly by world leaders, politicians, religious organizations, business groups and even cults. With the proper understanding of the Human Condition, leaders can lead their followers any direction they so chose. And in the case of Carbondale, they were able to convince them that the lit craft moving under the surface of the silt pond was nothing other than a lit miners lamp. And the eye witnesses accounts of those that actually saw the ufo go into the pond were suppressed. THE NEED TO BE ACCEPTED The Student of the Human Condition knows that people, not unlike animals, have a herd like mentality. They want to be accepted by the group. If they feel their acceptance threatened, most will back down and go along with the group norm. Although they may know that the truth is being suppressed, they will not go up against the group and face expulsion or ridicule from their peers. The obedience and hierarchical structure serve as an adhesive for the group. Members are controlled through the subtle influence of the group which is again controlled through the political hierarchy . The subtle influences are often outside of the person's regular conscious awareness thus , in most cases, they would never be aware of the manipulation. In the Leader/Follower Society, we naturally give over to the leaders of the community (both political and religious) the tools to govern us by and allow them to set the standards of the community. After the standards of living are thus set through political and religious measures, they control from afar , using the people within the groups or town (peer pressure) and media to monitor and apply necessary pressure. We are thus subtly 'guided' on how to dress, what music to listen to, what to read, who to vote for, what foods to eat, what to believe in and who to adhere to or avoid. THOUGHT CONTROL Another tool in governing the followers is through thought control. Members of the community are taught to avoid thoughts that could reflect negatively on the town and the people thereof. This avoidance of thought would naturally lead to psychological dissociation. Emotional control is instilled in us through the Church . We have been conditioned to feel guilty and full of shame for thinking past our traditional religious teachings. In many religious traditions, the very thought of UFOS or aliens point directly to the Devil and Demons. Naturally, thinking outside this box, to the possibilities that there are other creations outside our earthly sphere would definately be going against the general consensus of the town's religion. To acknowledge what took place at the silt pond of Carbondale would be a very heavy burden to bear for the followers of that church - Thus again through the burden of guilt and shame, one could end up psychologically traumatized leading to various disorders. DISINFORMATIONISTS Another aspect is information control. Incoming and outgoing information via the media is frequently controlled. The media is given false information and reports it , unknowingly, as truth. If they interview witnesses , they receive conflicting reports. As most reporters are not aware of Psychological Amnesia and Memory Distortion they naturally assume that the witness is either delusional or lying. After a few negative news reports , the witnesses cease to tell their accounts and the event becomes suppressed buried deep in a cold case file. In the case of Carbondale witnesses, we also need to understand the mind naturally attempts to make sense of what is illogical. - and to suppress the event of the UFO crashing in their silt pond, is illogical. Many are now coming forth to give their story. We need to be patient with them and understand how psychological amnesia works and the hows and whys behind them keeping the secret for so long. It is not our place to judge - but be there to listen and stand behind them on what has to be very difficult. |
