TICHIGAN WISCONSIN PLACE OF THE HEALING WATERS - Known as sacred waters, the native Americans and peoples before them , used these waters for healing their sick. Before settlers arrived in the early 1800's the land surrounding the Fox River and Tichigan Lake was inhabited by a great Native American woodland tribe, the Potawatomi. There is some tangible evidence of the importance of the River and Laketo the Potawatomi. The "Maney Mounds" burial sites and the original name of the Lake "Tish-ar-gan", meaning sacred burial grounds, speak to the reverence given to the area and the life blood its waters provided. Effigy mounds are found in serval locations in the area "Tischargan," meaning "home of the dead." The name was a reference to the effigy mounds and burial grounds in the area. Tischargan later became known as Tichigan. Back to Sacred Sites of Wisconsin |
