| In spring 1006 A.D., medieval people living sufficiently south were surprised by the brightest "new star" ever recorded in historic times. Although its exact position could only be figured out recently by finding its nebulous remnant, it was recorded by observers (often astrologers) in Europe, China, Japan, Egypt and Iraq, to have occurred near the star Beta Lupi, on the border to Centaurus. Chinese astrologers apparently has trouble in finding its "omen category", according to Burnham. | It was built to resemble a microcosm of the universe and its purpose was to provide a visual image of the teachings of the Buddha and show, in a practical manner, the steps through life that each person must follow to achieve enlightenment. The pilgrim to this shrine would first have been led around the base and shown the friezes, which illustrate the consequences of living in the World of Desire. In this realm ruled by Greed, Envy, and Ignorance, man is a slave to earthly desires and suffers from the illusions that are caused by these unfulfilled yearnings, a state regarded as hell by Buddhists. After completing this circuit, the pilgrim was then led in a clockwise fashion through five levels in a gradual ascension of the pyramid. Here he was shown how to conquer desire and attachment by viewing 1300 panelled friezes that illustrate the life of the Buddha and his previous incarnations. These levels were called the World of Form and correspond to the earthly realm in Buddhist symbology. The passages of both of these realms followed the square shape of the pyramid but above these two lay the World of Formlessness where the right-angled, heavily decorated passages gave way to a round unadorned summit where meditating Buddhas and saints sit in supreme bliss contemplating a view of exquisite beauty. In the centre a bell shaped tower, or stupa, points to heaven, a blissful realm beyond form and concept, known as Nirvana. Encompassing the totality of existence with its representations of heaven, earth, and hell in this metaphor of stone, the monument was abandoned after a severe earthquake and a large eruption of the volcano Merapi in 1006 AD until it was rediscovered by the West during colonial times. One of the miracles, perhaps equalling the miracle of its construction and craftsmanship, is that the monument still exists and can be seen to this day. This area of Java is one of the most earthquake prone regions in the world as well as one of the most volcanic. From the top of the temple, the volcano Merapi is easily visible, still smoking to this day, having erupted on more than a few occasions during the last millennia. | April 5, 2006 The aurora borealis made a surprise appearance over Michigan yesterday, turning the sky--and the landscape--vivid green. Shawn Malone of Marquette, MI, was awake at 2 a.m. and took this picture from a beach on Lake Superior: [above]. There was no solar flare or CME. So where did these auroras come from? Answer: The interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) near Earth tilted south on April 5th, opening a crack in Earth's magnetic defenses. Solar wind flowed in and sparked the unexpected display. |

| Prehistoric Native Americans may have carved a record of a supernova explosion that appeared in the skies a millennium ago into a rock in Arizona, US. John Barentine, an astronomer at the Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico, came across the carving while hiking in the White Tank Mountain Regional Park in Arizona. It depicts a scorpion and an eight-pointed star. "I had just been reading about the supernova of AD 1006 and I knew it appeared in the constellation Scorpius, so the connection flashed into my mind." To make his case, Barentine and his colleague Gilbert A. Esquerdo, at the Planetary Science Institute, Tucson, used planetarium software to recreate the sky as it would have appeared in Arizona during the supernova's appearance and overlaid it with photographs from the site. The supernova would have been brighter than a planet, and both it and the constellation - which is shaped like a scorpion - would have appeared just above the edge of the rock, in the same orientation depicted in the carvings. Native Americans populated the region during that period and often recorded objects thought to have magical powers, says Barentine. "It's by no means conclusive, but I think it's strong circumstantial evidence that the art depicts the supernova," says Barentine. He announced his theory at the American Astronomical Society Meeting in Calgary, in Alberta, Canada, on Monday. Star watchers The supernova was recorded by star watchers in Asia, the Middle-East and Europe. But until now, nobody thought that prehistoric Native Americans followed events in the sky. "I don't think enough credit has been given to the ancient Native Americans in the past, but that might change now," Barentine told New Scientist. |

A legend had arisen that an emperor would rise from his sleep to fight the Antichrist. 1005-1006 AD A terrible famine throughout Europe was seen as a sign of the closeness of the end. |

| June 7, 2006 Norway - Meteor Strike The Aftenposten newspaper in Norway reports that early Wednesday morning, the country was struck by a meteor that had the explosive force of the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. The meteor hit the side of a mountain. There are no reports of damage or casualties, but if the impact was as great as it appears, it is one of the most significant such events in decades. |
